(excerpt from the Land Use By-Law #2000/95)
No fence or screen or wall shall be constructed on any land within the City unless a building permit to
erect such structure is first obtained from the City Building Inspection Department.
- No fence or wall in a single family, multiple family or mobile home district shall be:-
- higher than 1.80 m in side yards and rear yards, to be measured as the average
elevation from the ground at the fence or wall, unless the rear yard contains an
outdoor swimming pool. In which case a maximum height of 2.4 m shall apply;
- higher than 1 m in front yards;
- of wire (chainlink permitted).
- in contravention to Camrose Traffic By-Law #1352.
- In the case of Highway Commercial, landscaping shall be provided and maintained to the
satisfaction of the Development Officer.
- Drive-in food outlets may be required to construct a 1.20 m high metal mesh fence on side
yards and front yards. Rear yards shall have a fence constructed of boards 1.80 m in height.
- Service Station - rear yards shall be fenced to a height of 1.80 m.

Fire Department Fees and Charges
By-Law #1970/95
Where the City of Camrose Fire Department has taken an action whatsoever for the purpose of extinguishing a
fire or responding to a fire call or incident within the City or for the purpose of preserving life or property
from injury or destruction by fire or other incidents on land within the City, including such actions taken by
the Camrose Fire Department on a false alarm. The Fire Department may, in respect of any costs incurred in
taking such action, charge any costs so incurred to the person who caused the fire or the owner or occupant of the
land in respect of which the action was taken.

Fire Permits
By-Law #1970/95
No person shall permit an open fire, nor burn, suffer allow or permit the burning of refuse or waster, within the
City of Camrose without a valid Fire Permit issued.
Fire Permits required within the City of Camrose:
- Fire permit - burning
- Fire permit - construction (i.e. fire pits)
- Fireworks storage and resale permits
- Fireworks display permit
- Petroleum storage tank removal/installation permit
Permits can be obtained from the Fire Department during
regular business hours.

Fire Pits, Outdoor Fireplaces and Stationary Barbeques
(Including Chimineas and Portable Fire Pits)
By-Law #1970/95
- Permits are required for all Fire Pits, Outdoor Fireplaces and Stationary barbeques.
- No permits are required for portable barbeques which are operated by liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG), natural gas or compressed briquettes or charcoal when used for the purpose of cooking or
obtaining warmth, provided the appliances are used on the property of the resident or in a public
area at a location approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
- Fire Pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbeques shall meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of 3 meters(10 feet) clearance shall be maintained from all
buildings, property lines and combustible materials or as approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
- Installations shall have a surface or cooking area not exceeding 61 centimeters (24") in diameter,
enclosed sides shall not exceed 46 centimeters (18") above the ground level and shall be constructed
of bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal, or other suitable non-combustible components as approved by
the Authority having jurisdiction.
- A spark arrestor mesh screen of 1.3 centimeters (1/2") expanded metal (or equivalent) to contain sparks
shall be provided over the fire at all times.
- Only clean fuel shall be used (clean, dry wood or charcoal). Refuse or waste matter shall not be burned.
- The user of such installations shall ensure that smoke or sparks do not create a nuisance or hazard
to neighbors or other properties.

How do I obtain a fire permit? |

The fire pit construction permit involves:
- Initial Gas line and Utilities locate
- Site inspection prior to construction
- Final inspection when construction is complete
If you have an existing fire pit, one inspection may only be required depending on the condition
of the fire pit. Follow-up may be required. |

Guilty of an infraction of this Bylaw, and upon summary conviction is liable to imprisonment for a
term of not more than (6) months or to a fine or not less than $500.00 nor more than $10,000.00,
or both fine and imprisonment, with the possible addition of the cost of fire response. |
