What does EMS stand for?
EMS is the abbreviation for Emergency Medical Services. EMS is a term used to convey the variety of services and skills EMTs and Paramedics are able to provide.
What is the difference between EMTs and Paramedics?
EMTs are Emergency Medical Technicians. EMTs have close to one year of classroom and on car training. EMTs are able to provide many skills including oxygen therapy, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, use of intravenous lines, and limited mediation therapy.
Paramedic training is approximately 2 years of training, both classroom and on car. Paramedics are able to provide advanced treatments including intubation, pacing of the heart, surgical airways, chest decompression, and vast medication therapy.
What is the difference between ALS and BLS?
ALS stands for Advanced Life Support and BLS stands for Basic Life Support. This refers to the level of service provided by an ambulance unit or ambulance service. ALS ambulances have either a Paramedic and an EMT or two Paramedics. BLS ambulances have 2 EMTs. Thus ALS ambulances provide a higher level of service.
