Lions Club of Camrose

The Lions Club of Camrose has been serving this community and surrounding area for the past 54 years and continues
to serve by supporting Community projects, Sports and Service organizations, Scholarship and Award programs at the
University and Schools.
The success of the Norm Mayer Roast is attributed to the generous donations of Community businesses and individuals,
whose donations assisted in the purchase of the Car as well as donations and/or assistance in procuring other items
sold at the auction and the donation of door prizes. In addition the overwhelming support of the Camrose and
surrounding Communities who purchased tickets to the event who whole heartily participated in the evening.
We would also, be remiss if we didn't recognize the excellent Roasters, the Auctioneer and the Emcee who added so
much to the proceedings.
Last but not least, Norm Mayer for agreeing to be roasted and allowing us all to see the inner side of his Personal
and Professional Life and "Norm's Way".
The Lions Club of Camrose is truly indebted to those who supported and participated in this project and we thank you.
The Lions' Motto is "We Serve". This Community support has only strengthened our desire to live our motto,
Thank you.

On behalf of the Villages within the Camrose County and the Town of Bashaw, I am pleased to have this opportunity
to say a few words on the Community Facility Enhancement Program funding towards the Edgeworth Centre.
A big thank you goes out to Kerry Grettum, former Mayor, and Angie Burwash, CAO, both of Bittern Lake for

and the Town of Bashaw, within Camrose County.

Esso Farm Customers Raise $10,000 for The Edgeworth Centre
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Camrose, Alberta – "Community Giving is part of who we are" say Rod and Sheilagh Ross, owners of Ross Agri,
an Esso agent with 11 locations in Central Alberta.
During the 2007 farm season, customers and staff from Ross Agri helped raise these funds through a
community-driven initiative called the Esso Farm Community Growth Fund. Esso contributed up to a
penny per litre from farm fuel purchases resulting in a total donation of $10,000 for the new
Edgeworth Centre Sports facility.
"This program really depends on the goodwill of our customers, and we would like to sincerely
thank them for their contributions," say Rod and Sheilagh Ross of Ross Agri-Supplies. "Contributing
to the development and well-being of our community is an integral part of doing business for our team here."
Once again this year, the annual Esso Farm Community Growth Fund program has raised over $250,000 for
projects in rural farming communities across Central and Western Canada. These funds are helping to
improve sports facilities, children's playgrounds and vital health and fire response services where
they are needed most.
Esso has been fueling farm businesses in Canada for over 100 years and is committed to supporting

NORSEMAN PONTIAC BUICK GMC LTD. DONATES $5,000 TO THE EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Lowell Knutson, owner of Norseman Pontiac GMC Ltd., along with staff from Norseman Pontiac, are seen
here presenting a cheque in the amount of $5,000 for The Edge worth Centre. This donation to The
Edgeworth Centre is a sponsorship for 20 seats in the EnCana Arena seating bowl of The Edgeworth Centre.
Norseman Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd. was established in September 1985 to serve Camrose and surrounding area
as a representative of Pontiac, Buick and GMC trucks for General Motors. Norseman provides new and used
vehicle sales, leasing, service and parts sales as a franchised automobile dealership. The Norseman staff
is involved in community activities, clubs and events; notably Rotary, Alberta's Promise, Motor Dealer
Government Committee, Special Olympics, Relay for Life and John Walsh's Lifeprint for Kids. Participation
with the Women's Conference, Camrose Regional Exhibition, and activities with the Camrose Police Service
are also a part of the involvement of Norseman staff.
Norseman Pontiac Buick GHMC Ltd. was presented with the coveted General Motors Triple Crown for
excellence in customer satisfaction, employee excellence and vehicle service and parts sales. At
Norseman, it is believed important to give back to the community that supports our business. In 2002
Norseman expanded and upgraded their facility to General Motors image standards to better serve the
customers, and the customers have rewarded that expansion with increased patronage.
Speaking for Norseman Pontiac Buick GMS Ltd., Lowell Knutson said, "Our donation to The Edgeworth Centre
will help to provide our community with quality sports activities and our citizens with health and wellness
opportunities. Norseman Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd. wanted to be a participant in bringing the citizens of Camrose
a facility that will provide for excellence in athletics and community wellness."
Capital Campaign Manager John Howard said, "This gift from Norseman Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd., again
demonstrates the concern that the Camrose business community has for the total enhancement of the Camrose
region. It is always rewarding to see our local businesses giving something back to the community. This
gift will make the Camrose region stronger and help to fulfill the vision of the Edgeworth Centre to make
Camrose a regional centre for health, education and wellness; as well as a major sport tourism destination."
GROVES' VALUE DRUG MART CONTRIBUTES $5,000 TO THE EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Barry Galenza announced today that Groves' Value Drug Mart was making a donation of $5,000 to The
Edgeworth Centre, and sponsoring 20 seats in the new EnCana Arena. This sponsorship brings the
number of sponsored seats to 785. Seat sponsorships in total have contributed $196, 250 to
the capital campaign.
In speaking about this gift, Mr. Galenza said, "Our family has lived in Camrose and district for many
generations. We have had an active role in the community and have been involved in many sporting
activities. We have operated a family business for 45 years and we believe strongly in supporting our
sporting heritage. 'Keeping it in the community' is a Value Drug Mart tradition and that is why we are
supporting the new Edgeworth Centre."
In 1978 a group of 13 pharmacists banded together to form what is now known as Value Drug Mart
Associates Ltd. Their mission was clear—to provide quality healthcare and great products in
community-minded, independently owned and operated stores. Today, the association consists of
44 member shareholder Value Drug Mart stores, 16 Apple Drugs member stores, 10 Rxellence Professional
Dispensaries, and 300 affiliated stores. Our Central Office and Distribution Centre in Edmonton, AB is
located in 85,000 square feet that is owned and operated by the member shareholders, under the direction
of an elected Board of Directors.
The original concept of the founding member shareholders was to provide the existing and future member
shareholders with an organization designed to provide increased profitability to individual store owners
rather than to create a wholesale profit centre. That direction remains to this day.
Forty-five years ago, Gerry and Sandi Galenza purchased Groves' Drugs Ltd. In 1978, Gerry was one of the
founding members of Value Drug Mart. Barry and Janet Galenza purchased the store in 1993 and since that
time have continued the commitment to providing good products and services at competitive prices.
Capital Campaign Manager, John Howard, said, "This family owned business with a long business history
in Camrose, and the family with a long commitment to sports in our community, demonstrates the best that
makes the Camrose region a great place to live. This kind of personal and corporate citizenship, concern
and contribution not only made the Edgeworth Centre possible, but make living in the Camrose region a
great experience."
THE SOAP STOP MAKES A DONATION OF $10,000 TO THE EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Robin Carson of The Soap Stop announced today a donation of $10,000 to The Edgeworth Centre. This gift is
a donation-in-kind of materials needed to properly maintain a clean and safe environment throughout the
Edgeworth Centre, making the experience of using the Edgeworth Centre an even more pleasant one.
Speaking for The Soap Stop, Robin Carson said, "The City of Camrose, and the partner groups Camrose
County, Province of Alberta, University of Alberta and Alberta Lotteries, have made a commitment to
the local community in their support of businesses and infrastructure development and have made the
Camrose region a simply wonderful place to live and raise our children. We have all benefited from
the dedicated efforts of these leaders and employees and this is an opportunity for our business
(The Soap Stop) and for me personally to give back a small portion of what I and my family have
enjoyed over the nearly 23 years that we have lived here."
The Soap Stop has been in business for nearly 25 years. We supply janitorial, industrial and household
cleaning products to businesses, institutions and households across central Alberta. Our territory
stretches from Q.E II Highway to the Alberta Saskatchewan border, from the Northern most area of
Lloydminster, to the southern most area of Halkirk. We have enjoyed tremendous support and loyalty
from the businesses and people of Camrose, and feel blessed that we have been able to call it home
for these many years. We have 9 staff members, a number of whom have been with us for more than 10
years. The business was started by Clint Adams, my father-in-law, in 1983. He came from the tire
business, having been Fountain Tires first store manager at the age of 17, and one of their first
district managers. He invited my wife Shellie and me to help in the business January of 1985, and
together with my brother-in-law and mother-in-law, we ran the store for 9 years. At the end of 1993,
my wife and I became sole owners of the business. We have continued in the same manner as what the
store started out to be in 1983, a testament to Clint’s business acumen and his vision.
Capital Campaign Manager, John Howard, noted the positive attitude of Robin’s remarks in what the
Camrose region and meant to their family, and of the importance of giving back. Said Howard,
"It is this kind of thinking that has allowed the Camrose region to expand and flourish. The Soap
Stop is to be commended for helping to lead the way is such visionary thinking and giving."

as a youth, and for that I am thankful. Camrose is a strong and supportive hockey community that
can take pride in it's commitment to the sport and is well deserving of this facility. I commend
the City of Camrose and its partners for their generous commitment to provide a state of the art

the same."

HI-WAY 13 TRANSPORT LTD. GIVES $13,000 ON AUGUST 13 TO THE EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.

August 13 at 1300 hours. A flex room in the EnCana Arena of The Edgeworth Centre will carry the name
"Hi-Way 13-Flex Room" in recognition of this gift.
Neither Hi-Way 13 nor their generosity in this community is new. Hi-Way 13 Transport was incorporated in 1957
when Fred J. (Bitz) O'Riordan and his brother, Tom O'Riordan, decided to amalgamate their efforts and expand
their operations into larger equipment and loads. After Tom's passing, Bitz bought out his brother's share of
the business and now, with four of his six children as shareholders, run Hi-Way 13 Transport.
Freddie is the General Manager and & also looks after the Calgary operation; Kerry-Anne is the Manager
of Camrose and also looks after the claims department; Bob is a licensed mechanic and is responsible for managing
the mechanic shop and all equipment maintenance; and Mike is still our number one trucker.
Hi-Way 13 employs over 100 full-time personnel and runs: 16 straight trucks; 78 tractors; 1 jeep; tandem and
tridem converters; and 320 trailers consisting of: 27 , 48, and 53 foot tandem and tridem vans; decks; b-trains

any place in the world out of Calgary and Edmonton.
Hi-Way 13 provides most of the local movement of pipe between the two Camrose railheads, two OSM Tubular plants,
two Shaw Plants and the Garneau plant. On any given day, we can have upwards of 25 trucks & trailers involved in
this service. We also move a great deal of pipe between Camrose, Edmonton, Calgary and Regina to several yards
throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
In the last three years we also have become very involved in providing full load service, hauling construction
equipment & building materials to the mines and towns of the NWT and Yukon, some of which can only be reached
via the ice roads in the winter.
Bitz's philosophy when the Company began was that "we are here to satisfy the customers' needs to the best of our
ability and the bottom line will look after itself". Even though the second generation is in charge now, this
motto remains unchanged.
Speaking for Hi-Way 13 of this gift The Edgeworth Centre, Freddie O’Riordan said, "Camrose has been the
headquarters for Hi-Way 13 Transport Ltd. since 1957. The Camrose area has been very kind in supporting

the community and to insure that we have in our community a fist class facility that will attract all
types of events in the future."
John Howard, Capital Campaign Manager added that gifts like this one from Hi-Way 13 have made it possible
to reach our fundraising goal. "When we finally get to watch figure skating, minor hockey, the Vikings,

MANCHAKOWSKIS SPONSOR SEATS IN EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
The Camrose Windsor Hotel fastball teams that took to the diamonds for over three decades could not have asked for
better sponsors than Walter and Jean Manchakowski."We never had to pay for anything," explained Gerry Galenza, who was a
member of the Windsor Hotel team that won the Alberta Senior B Championship in 1970. "If we had trouble hitting he
(Walter) would tell us to go down to Sid's (sport equipment supply store) to buy a new bat that had some hits on it
and put it on the Windsor Hotel bill. "If we had a tear in our socks we just had to go down and pick up a new pair."
The Manchakowskis did not concern themselves much with whether or not the team played well. "They always had a pop for
us after the game, win or lose," said Galenza. "The steaks they served up were big enough to cover the entire plate."
The team received extra special treatment at tournaments, whether they were close to home or as far away as Yellowknife.
"The one I remember the most was the annual July 1 tournament in Hay Lakes," said Galenza. "The kids would be chasing
gophers during the day and at the end Walter and Jean would have this nice cold flat of Molson Canadian or whatever.
"The adults would be eating steaks and the kids would have their hamburgers."
While the Manchakowskis ended their sponsorship in 2002, the generosity they have shown to their players has continued.
Just last week, the couple purchased three rows of seats in section F of the Edgeworth Centre,
two of which will be carry the tag "Windsor Hotel Fastball Team, 1969 to 2002." The other row will be named for the
Windsor Hotel, from which the Manchakowskis will be stepping away as owners. "I just wanted to recognize all the players
for everything they have given over the years," said Walter.
The Manchakowskis began their sponsorship of the Windsor Hotel Fastball Team soon after purchasing the Windsor 38 years ago.
"The team almost folded when the Merchants came in the 1970s and started taking away some of our players, but I told the guys
that as long as they wanted to keep going I would sponsor them," said Walter. "I told them we would be the sponsors as long
as we were the Windsor owners." The Windsor Hotel team actually began under the name of Camrose Tire and Rubber, which o
perated where the Knaut Johnson law office is now located. "I still have an old ball jacket with the name Camrose Tire
and Rubber and the name Don Pearson," said Galenza. "Unfortunately, Don didn't have as many good refreshments as Walter."
Members of the first Windsor Hotel team included Galenza, who was known as "Flipper" because of his underhand throwing
style, Earl Berry, Frank Cook and Jim Lowen, among others. Lowen was the team's cleanup hitter, pitcher and centre fielder.
"He (Lowen) was strong as an ox and he could hit the ball a mile," said Galenza. "I remember one time when we were playing
in Ardrossan seeing the outfielders play across the road in the ditches whenever he came up to bat. "In Spruce Grove he hit the
ball so far one time that it went across the street into the open air ice rink."
Many of the original Windsor Hotel ballplayers had their sons play for the team after they decided to hang up the cleats. "We
had many second generation players," said Walter. "I know Earl Berry's sons, Jeff and Scott, played, as did Doug Galenza's
sons Ryan and Scott, Frank Cook's son, Jim, Gerry Galenza's son, Pat, and Marvin Klein's son, Dean. "Actually, Jim was the
batboy when his dad played."
The Manchakowskis plan on visiting the new Edgeworth Centre once it is open to watch their
grandchildren play hockey. "It's going to mean a great deal to Camrose and it is going to serve a wide area," said Walter.
"Just the appearance of the arena itself will make people want to come."
Edgeworth Centre capital campaign manager John Howard feels the seats sponsored by the Manchakowskis
and others will serve to give recognition to the variety of sports events and activities that add to the quality of life
in the Camrose region. "The Manchakowskis favoured fastball for their team sponsorship but value all levels and varieties
of sports, and value what sports mean to the health and maturing of those who come to participate. Their gift is a gift to
the future, as their sponsorship of the Windsor Hotel fastball teams was their contribution to the past."
BORDER PAVING MAKES $200,000 DONATION
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Border Paving presented a cheque for $200,000 to the Edgeworth Centre capital fundraising campaign April 26
in exchange for the right to have its name on the centre's 200-seat user arena. The donation was the second largest to the
campaign by a business, next only to the $500,000 donated by EnCana Corporation just over a year ago. "It is a real privilege to
be able to run a company that is successful enough that we can do something like this," said Border Paving owner Vic Walls. "It is a
way for us to give back to the community."
The donation was made by all the staff at Border Paving. "Twenty-five per cent of this is their contribution from
our profit sharing plan," said Walls. "That works out to be $200 per individual that works with Border Paving company
wide." Border Paving has been doing work in Camrose every year since 1963, when Jim Lamb was the city engineer. The first
project was the paving of main street. "The City of Camrose has been a very good customer," said Border Paving branch
manager George Neis. "It is probably the best customer we have." Neis feels the new centre will be a great addition to
the community. "It is certainly a big upgrade from what is here right now and it is well deserved. "The community will
prosper from this for a long time. "It will bring several events to town that wouldn't otherwise come here."
Edgeworth Centre campaign coordinator John Howard expressed his thanks to Border Paving for the
gift. "Border Paving is a good corporate citizen and to make a contribution like this shows the confidence it has in our
community," he said.
Construction update
Late August or early September continues to be the target for completion of the new regional sport development centre. "The Camrose
Kodiaks' home opener is the week of the 20th or the 22nd," so that is the ultimate final date," said Camrose Community Services
manager Paul Nielsen. One of the biggest projects, the installation of the centre's ice plant, should be finished at the end of
this week. "The only thing they are doing now is laying all the pipe in the flooring area," said Nielsen. "The first concrete
pour of the ice slab is the second week of May, and the second pour is the week after that." The next task to be completed is
the construction and paving of the parking lot, at a cost of between $2.5 and $3 million. "The trailers will be relocated
away from in front of the building and the work will start right away," said Nielsen. "Hopefully by the middle of summer
we will see most of it done." The actual facility lights have been turned on, and the cabinetry is in place in most of the rooms.

the five hundred mark, bringing the total of seats sold to 539 thus far.
Greg and Judy Stewart said of this gift, "Camrose is a great place to live and to do business. We wanted to give something back to the
community, and the Edgeworth Centre represents a good variety of what makes Camrose great. The Edgeworth Centre will be a
centre for health and wellness, for minor sports like figure skating and hockey, for collegiate and AJHL hockey, for education with the
connection to University of Alberta Augustana Campus, for a community gathering place, and for use by families and Camrosians of all ages.
We are pleased that Lou's Fashions can help to make this project a reality in our region, and hope to see it well used in the future."
John Howard, Capital Campaign Manager expressed thanks to Greg and Judy Stewart and Lou's Fashions for their gift, and commented that their
addition to the seat sponsorship program is significant. "At $250 for each seat, if all are sold it will bring an additional $600,000 into
the project. Lou's Fashions joins with other businesses in sponsoring major sections of seats, and we are grateful for their gift. The
sponsorship of a single seat has been kept to a cost that makes it possible for everyone to have the opportunity to join this project.
Large seat section sponsorships, such as this by Lou’s Fashions, provide a way for businesses to support the Edgeworth Centre." Together corporate,
business, service club and individual gifts are moving the project toward the goal of $3 million.

Andreassen Olson Borth has been part of the greater Camrose community since Harry Andreassen and
Alex Murray founded the firm some 55 years ago. The firm currently has offices in Camrose, Killam,

"We all have benefitted from the sports and leisure facilities in the Camrose area and wanted to take
this opportunity to support a project which will serve the region for years to come," commented partner
James Andreassen.
Donations like the one from Andreassen Olson Borth have helped bring the community fundraising campaign
for the Camrose Sport Development Centre over the $2 million mark en route to a goal of $3 million.
The project itself, as reported on the front page of last week's Camrose Booster, is on target for
projected opening day this August.
"The pace of construction at the Edgeworth Centre is right on schedule," said
Sly Baier, general foreman for Clark Builders.
Paul Nielsen, Manager of Community Services, said the City of Camrose is thrilled with the building
in every aspect.
"Whether it’s the architect, builder or community support, we just couldn't be happier. We’re
looking forward to getting the keys to the building in mid-August," said Nielsen.
Plans are already in the preliminary stage for a grand opening tentatively featuring on-ice and
off-ice celebrations.

and centre, physiotherapy clinic and lab, and a host of other features.

SCOTIABANK MAKES GIFT OF $15,000 TO EDGEWORTH CENTRE
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Scotiabank has stepped forward to help make the Edgeworth Centre a reality with a
gift of $15,000 toward the goal of $3 million in donations needed for Edgeworth Centre.
Scotiabank is one of North America's leading financial institutions with a rich history dating back to 1832. Although its
reach is global, the bank focuses on individual customers, employees, shareholders, and on building a strong community
presence. In fact, in 2005 Scotiabank contributed more than $40 million to numerous organizations, including direct
donations and community support.
"We wanted to continue to show our community spirit and pride," states Scotiabank branch manager
Will Anderson. "We felt that to be part of this project was a great way to do that. We live and work here
in this community, and this project is an excellent way to give back. We can benefit in some way from building
the Sports Development Centre in our community."
With the Scotiabank donation, the Edgeworth Centre Society's fundraising campaign is edging
closer to the $2 million mark.
The next major thrust for the Edgeworth Centre campaign will be the sale of seats in the EnCana Arena. The naming right
for each seat is available for $250 per seat.
MOLSON SCORES BIG FOR CAMROSE - BREWER DONATES $10,000 TO THE EDGEWORTH CENTRE AS PART OF "HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA"
Photo provided by The Camrose Booster.
Canada's oldest brewer today donated $10,000 to the Edgeworth Centre to celebrate
"Hockey Day in Canada."
Molson donated the funds to help complete the new sports complex as part of a fun, hockey-themed event in front
of the still-under-construction centre that included Mayor Clarence Mastel, MLA LeRoy Johnson and MP Kevin Sorenson.
Camrose is one of the communities to be featured January 13th as part of the CBC's "Hockey Day in Canada" broadcast.
"Molson is more than just Canada's oldest brewer - we are a community builder," said local Molson sales rep Jean Jewell.
"There is no better way for Molson to help build community spirit than to help build a community centre, especially one where
so much hockey can be played."
Molson is a premier sponsor of all levels of hockey across Canada from the national men and women's Olympic teams, to
NHL teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, to WHL teams like the Red Deer Rebels, to local hockey like
the Camrose Kodiaks of the AJHL.
"Being a community builder means more than just sponsoring the big-leagues," Jewell said. "It also
means being part of the social fabric of each and every community where Molson and its employees live, work and play
- and we're proud to play our part here in Camrose."
Molson is also a major sponsor of the annual Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, which was recently named Country Event of the
Year for 2006 by the Canadian Country Music Association.
In the hockey-themed event outside the sportsplex, Johnson and Sorenson faced-off and the winner then hustled over to the
makeshift blueline where he passed to Jewell, who scored on a breakaway against Mayor Mastel. Jewell then pulled a
$10,000 cheque from her Molson hockey jersey and offered it to Mastel in exchange for the ceremonial hockey ball.
"The sports centre is more than a much-needed recreation facility - it's the heart of our
community's vision to make Camrose the hub of economic, social, health, education and leisure pursuits in east-central
