Benefits of the Arts

(Adapted from the Calgary Civic Arts Policy)

  • The Arts provide opportunities for members of its community, including children, adults, teens, those with disabilities and the elderly.
  • The Arts contribute to our quality of life, whether through hands on or audience participation.
  • According to Statistics Canada, the Arts have been enjoying an increased attendance over the years.
  • Human beings have historically felt driven to artistically express themselves whether it be through visual arts, dance, theatre, writing, music or media arts. The arts have the potential to be very fulfilling for many.
  • The Arts help to preserve our heritage and traditions. This is especially recognized within Canada's culturally diverse population.
  • The Arts enhance a child's development. Through participation in the Arts many skills are developed such as communication, self-confidence, academic and personal problem solving, self-discipline and social expression.

    The Arts also:

    • Develop our Civic Identity
    • Help develop volunteerism
    • Develop job skills
    • Enhance the Community
    • Provide enjoyment
    • Provide many economic benefits
