Job #3
Getting Rid of Micro-organisms in the Water

Filter
Next, the water passes through a huge filter. The filter is made of layers of sand, gravel, and anthracite (coal). The water moves through the layers. Suspended silt, clay, and some micro-organisms that were in the water become trapped between the particles of sand, gravel, and coal.

Chloramine
Then a chemical called chloramine is added to the water. Chloramine is a mixture of chlorine and ammonia. It is a disinfectant, or a substance that destroys micro-organisms. It provides protection against harmful bacteria, and viruses that may be in the water.

Ultraviolet System
The ultraviolet system is a pipe that has an ultraviolet lamp. The light from the ultraviolet lamp works much the same way that the sun does in destroying bacteria. Water passes past the light. As the water passess by the ultraviolet light, harmful bacteria in the water are inactivated.
