Flood Protection

A flood! A flood! Swim for your lives!

A flood doesn't happen very often in Camrose. But if a flood does happen, we want to be ready.

Before the City of Camrose was born, mostly fields and forest areas covered the land. Most of the water that fell just soaked into the soil and the rest ran off slowly into rivers and streams.

Over the years more and more homes were built. Now pavement, sidewalks, driveways, and buildings cover the land. Instead of water soaking into the soil as before, now most of the rainwater runs off the hard surfaces.

Because there is more water runoff, there are also more harmful substances being washed into the creek. As the rainwater flows over the land and into the storm sewers it absorbs many substances from roads, lawns and fields. These substances end up in Camrose Creek.

The City of Camrose has Planned for the Extra Runoff.

  • There are storm drains that are connected to pipes under the ground all over the city. The water moves downhill by gravity into storm drains and on into Camrose Creek.

  • Roads, parks, and lots are planned so that water flows away from buildings and towards Camrose Creek.

  • Water retention ponds have been built to collect rainwater from areas around the pond. There is a smaller pipe that slows down the water flow out of the pond.
