The Driver

IT'S A FACT: The DRIVER stops the vehicle. STOP signs do not make a vehicle stop. Your hand cannot make a vehicle stop. Only the driver can stop a vehicle. What you should know about a driver of a vehicle:

A driver needs a long distance to stop a vehicle:
  1. The driver must see people waiting to cross. Make sure the driver is looking right at you. Make sure their eyes are looking at your eyes.

  2. The driver must decide to stop.

  3. The driver must put his foot on the brake.

  4. The brake must take hold and stop the vehicle.

  5. Keep in mind that vehicles need a longer distance to stop if they are speeding or if road and weather conditions are not ideal (icy patches, rain or snow, gravel roads).

  6. Large vehicles like buses or trucks need more time and distance to stop.

Caution is always the best policy. Do not leave the curb until you are sure that it is safe to do so. Sometimes drivers are not paying attention, unable to stop, or are unable to see you. Your safety is your concern!
