Composting

How is Compost Handled?

  • Materials like old pumpkins, grass clippings, leaves and Christmas trees generate greenhouse gases when buried in a landfill where there is no oxygen.
  • These materials are transported to the compost pile at the landfill site.
  • The material is turned over to allow oxygen into the pile for safer decomposition to take place.
  • The finished material is rich in nutrients, and will be used as cover once the landfill is full. A layer of rich soil will be put over the landfill, so that the land can be used again.
