Composting
How is Compost Handled?
- Materials like old pumpkins, grass clippings, leaves and Christmas trees generate greenhouse gases when buried in a landfill
where there is no oxygen.
- These materials are transported to the compost pile at the landfill site.
- The material is turned over to allow oxygen into the pile for safer decomposition to take place.
- The finished material is rich in nutrients, and will be used as cover once the landfill is full.
A layer of rich soil will be put over the landfill, so that the land can be used again.
