Collection Compounds at the Landfill

There are special collection compounds at the Camrose Sanitary Landfill. These collection compounds are there to encourage people to think before they dump things into the landfill.

People can take materials that can be recycled or materials that are harmful to the environment to these special compounds at the landfill.

Propane and Oxygen Tank Compound
The tanks will be loaded onto a truck and taken to a place where the metal from these tanks can be recycled.

Pesticide Container Compound
Pesticides are chemicals that are used to kill plant and animal pests. These chemicals can be very harmful to the environment.
The pesticide containers must be disposed of in a special way. The containers must be washed three times to rid them of the pesticides. Then the containers will be taken to Swan Hills for further cleaning and recycling.

Oil Collection Compound:
There is an oil collection compound at the sanitary landfill.
The used motor oil is poured into the opening. The oil flows into a large underground tank. Then the oil is pumped from the tank into an oil truck. The truck transports the oil to a refinery where the oil will be cleaned, and then it can be reused.

Tire Collection Compound:
Old tires can be taken to the landfill. The old tires will be loaded onto a truck and taken for recycling. They will be chipped into tiny pieces and made into mats, used in playgrounds, or used for making roads.

Old Battery Compound:
There is an area at the landfill for collecting old vehicle batteries. These old batteries will be recycled. Any money that is received from recycling these batteries will be given to a Camrose group of Cubs and Scouts.

Fridge and Deep Freezer Compound:
There is a substance in fridges and deep freezes, nonflammable gas or liquid fluorocarbons (Freon) that is used to make them cold. This substance must be removed before the fridge or deep freeze can be left at the landfill. The Freon is hazardous to the layer of ozone that surrounds our earth.

Old Metal Compound:
There is a special area at the landfill where old metal is collected. The metal will be pressed into huge bales. The bales of metal are loaded onto a truck and taken to a place where the metal will be melted and made into new things.

Burning Barrel and Ashes Compound:
There is a special area at the landfill where burning barrels and ashes can be left. It could cause a big problem if anything hot were placed into the active pit area. The garbage could catch on fire.

Compost Compound:
Materials such as grass, leaves, and saw dust can be taken to the landfill. The pile of compost will be turned over often, so that oxygen can get into the pile. This helps it decompose faster. Once all the plant material has decomposed it will be rich soil-like material that will be used for closing the landfill. Then grass, shrubs, and trees will be planted.
