- Weighing scale
Note: All vehicles entering and exiting the Sanitary Landfill are weighed at the weigh
scale by the scale house attendant. This allows the Authority to correctly determine
the amount of waste deposited at the landfill. Based on the amount and type of waste
deposited at the landfill, the appropriate tipping fees
will be charged to users. (Scavenging is not allowed, as it is dangerous
to scavengers and disruptive to landfill operations.)

Storage compound for empty pesticide containers
Note: The empty containers (which must be triple rinsed prior to acceptance to the landfill) are chipped twice per year
(Spring and Fall) by a contractor. Any remaining traces of
pesticides are drawn off of the chipped pesticide containers. These
containers are then sent away for recycling. For more information, see the Alberta Environment
Pesticide Factsheet.
- Battery recycling compound
Note: The operator of the Sanitary Landfill is responsible for the
proper recycling of these batteries. Part of the agreement between the
landfill operator and the Authority is that proceeds from the recycling
of these batteries are donated to the 2nd Camrose United Scout Group.
- Oil and empty oil container recycling compound

Note: The landfill operator is responsible
for the proper recycling of the waste oil. Contractors are hired to
periodically remove the oil. It is then cleaned of its impurities and reused.

Large appliance and scrap metal recycling compound
Note: There are three
main types of metals which are accepted at the Sanitary Landfill: scrap metal,
general appliances and Freon-containing appliances. Scrap metal includes
such things as car bodies and rolled animal fences. Scrap metal (plus
appliances which do not contain Freon) can be disposed in the Sanitary Landfill,
once the appropriate fees have been paid.
Appliances which contain Freon, including fridges, freezers and air conditioners,
must have the Freon removed from them prior to acceptance to the landfill.
Most of the local refrigeration companies in Camrose are authorized to remove the
Freon from your old appliances. Once the Freon is removed, your authorized refrigeration
company will attach a sticker notifying the Sanitary Landfill that the Freon has
been properly removed and disposed of. You need to have this sticker
on your Freon-containing appliance prior to bringing it to the Sanitary Landfill - a surcharge applies if the sticker is not present.
When the volume of scrap metal reaches substantial levels, MCL (the landfill operator) contracts a company to
crush the metal and truck it away for recycling. Click here
to see pictures from the most recent metal recycling event.
Although the metal from "white goods" (such as fridges and stoves) generates more income
for metal recyclers than other metals, the operator (under its agreement with the Authority)
is required to ensure that all scrap metals are sent away for the same degree of
recycling. That way, all of the metal appliances in the landfill are recycled.
-
Tire recycling compound
Note: The
Alberta Recycling Management Authority (an agency of the provincial government) is responsible for the
proper recycling of old tires. Most often, these tires are picked up
directly at automotive and tire retailers, rather than at the Sanitary Landfill.
As a result of this on-site tire collection program,
the number of tires actually being stockpiled at the Sanitary Landfill has dropped
dramatically in the past few years.

Compost area for vegetative matter
Note: City residents have two options for composting:
Residents are encouraged to compost their own vegetable matter (such as grass clippings and apple cores).
Compostable matter can be used in the garden as a natural fertilizer.
Centra Cam Recycling Depot organizes composting workshops
and constructs composters (for sale).
Composting at home saves money for the user (by not having to buy
fertilizers) and for the landfill (by slowing the speed by which the
landfill fills up). Click
here to link to Composting Homepage.
The other option for city residents not wishing to compost at home is to deposit their compostable
matter (free from tree trimmings and other coarse material) into the designated
area at Centra Cam Recycling Depot. The compost from this area is taken to the Sanitary Landfill.
Note: County residents are also encouraged to
compost at home. The benefits for home composting are the same as for city
residents: reduced fertilizer costs. The compost area at the
landfill, although used primarily as a disposal area for grass clippings from
Camrose parks (through Leisure
Services), does accept debris-free compost from county residents. It
is added to the compost collected at the Centra Cam Recycling Depot location and used as part of
the final cover for the active site of the landfill.

Active landfill dumping area
Approaching active area from east (with the equipment shed in the foreground).
(Click here for an in depth look at the various techniques used at the Sanitary Landfill.)
Included services:
- Area for ashes and/or burning barrels (not hot)
Note: Garbage which is still hot shall not be brought to the Sanitary Landfill.
The equipment operator has the authority to refuse admittance of any
person whose garbage is, in the discretion of the operator, unsafe for disposal in the landfill.
- Active refuse area
Note: Refuse is delivered here either by private vehicles or by commercial or
residential collection trucks. Any garbage which has demolition material
containing asbestos is subject to further regulations. This garbage must
be triple-bagged in yellow bags to warn landfill personnel of the safety
hazard of asbestos.
-
Area for burnable materials
Only certain materials will be accepted for burning. In particular, any untreated, unpainted wood is
burnable. Also, any whole trees or tree parts (including clippings and
branches) will be accepted to the burn area. No sawdust (which can easily
be spread by the wind while still hot) will be admitted
into the burn area; sawdust should be disposed into the active
area of the landfill.
- Waste concrete and asphalt pieces are stored
at the Concrete Compound rather than at the Sanitary Landfill
Contact Public Works (672-5513) for more information
on the Concrete Compound, including dumping hours and rates (Concrete Disposal
Application Form). (Click here to link to the Concrete Recycling web page)
- Propane Bottles at the Propane Compound at the Camrose Regional Sanitary Landfill
Note: There is a small fee for recycling propane bottles.
