Electrical Permits
Online Electrical Permit (Word) An electrical permit is required to install, alter or add to an electrical system. No person shall perform electrical work without first obtaining an electrical permit. A supply of electricity shall not be provided to an electrical system unless a permit issued in respect of the installation is presented to the supplier. Note: An electrical permit is not required for the replacement of electrical equipment with units of a similar type if the replacement is made for the purpose of maintaining the system and does not modify the ratings or characteristics of the electrical installation. (This generally only applies the electrical work performed in replacing fuses, receptacles, switches and utilization equipment with proper respective units of a similar type where the replacement can be made without other modifications being required to the electrical installation). Electrical permit applications must clearly include a mailing address complete with postal code and a phone number in which the applicant/owner can be reached. The application also requires a correct civic address or legal description of the project location. The person undertaking the electrical work is responsible to call our office to request inspection at the appropriate time. To avoid cancellation of a permit the Permit Holder must adhere to the terms of a permit. Permit Definitions & Responsibilities “Act” means the Safety Codes Act Chapter S-1 which applies to the design, manufacture, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. “Annual Electrical Permits” to perform minor repairs may be issued to the owner or operator of an establishment that either employs a full time electrician or obtains an electrical contractor to perform minor repairs. “Electrical Contractor” means the holder of a valid master electrician certificate or a valid restricted master electrician certificate issued under the Act. “Electrical installation or utilization equipment” means all or part of a consumer's service and electrical equipment connected to the load side of it. “Electrical system” means an assembly or any part of an assembly of electrical equipment or components used or intended to be used for the generation, transmission, distribution, control or utilization of electrical energy, but does not include any thing excluded by the regulations from the definition of electrical system. “Farmstead Permit” is an electrical permit that may be issued to an owner of a farm building served by a single phase electrical system. “Homeowner Permit” is an electrical permit that may be issued to an owner who resides in a single family residential dwelling where the electrical system serves that building.
