Sanitary Interconnections
38 Street and 44 Avenue

Last Modified Jul 17, 08

Project Profile:

A recent update to the City's Sanitary Sewer Master Plan, accepted by City Council in late-2007, identified that a few of the smaller lateral sanitary sewers within the Southern part of the Mohler Industrial Area are operating at or above their design capacity during wet-weather storm events. That is to say, during a large storm event, certain key sanitary pipes will become filled to capacity with a combination of regular sanitary flows, as well as infiltrating surface water. Computer modeling has shown that these sanitary pipes may surcharge their sanitary flows to near ground level.

The newly installed trunk sanitary line has capacity to deal with sewer flows during the same major storm events. As a proactive measure, the Sanitary Sewer Master Plan recommended that the City intercept the two parallel systems in two separate locations, allowing surcharging flows in the over-capacity lines to empty into the under-capacity sanitary pipe. These interconnects, which will occur near the intersection of 38 Street & 44 Avenue, and as well at 41 Street & 44 Avenue, will virtually eliminate the possibility of sanitary surcharge at these locations, reducing the overall possibility of environmental contamination within the Mohler Industrial Area.

Engineering:

The design and site supervision of this project will be conducted by the City Engineering Department.

Contractor:

Nu Edge Construction was chosen as the contractor for this project.

Budget and Funding:

This project was approved in the 2008 Capital Budget, with funding coming entirely from sanitary utility rates. The combined cost for the 2 sanitary interconnects is anticipated to be $125,000.

Schedule:

Work on the two sewer interconnects is expected to be completed by late July or early August. Roadway paving repairs, where applicable, will take place immediately following the sewer replacement work.
