46 Street/ North Ring Road Storm Drainage Channel
Last Modified Nov 21, 06
Project Profile:
In 2003, a major storm sewer was constructed on 46 Street from 52nd Avenue to 55th Avenue. Phase 2 of this
project will see the extension of this storm system upstream on 52b Avenue into the Rosebud subdivision (just
south of Cam Pipe) and downstream section as part of the North Ring Road storm drainage channel.
The largest component of the 2006 work will be the north ring road ditch construction, which involves the
excavation of the ultimate road ditch and the berm construction abutting the mobile home subdivision on the
north side of Camrose from 46 Street to the Camrose Creek just west of 53rd Street.
In order to excavate the soil needed to build the ditch, it will be necessary to lower approximately 100 meters
of high pressure natural gas pipeline. ATCO Pipelines has been contacted regarding this and is planning
to lower this section of pipeline in the fall. The costs involved in lowering the pipeline were known at the
outset of this project, and have been accounted for in the total budget of this project.
The City has been working with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as well as with Alberta Environment
to ensure that all works are completed in such a manner as to minimize impacts to the environment and fish habitat.
This project has been approved by both departments. Approvals have also been obtained from Navigable Waters Protection,
Transport Canada.
Engineering:
The design and site supervision of this project will be conducted by
Associated Engineering and the City
Engineering Department .
Contractor:
Kran Construction has been awarded the contract for the storm drainage channel construction.
Budget and Funding:
The total project budget is $1,400,000 including the lowering of the gas pipeline at $110,000.
The project is funded entirely by the City of Camrose under debenture borrowing.
Schedule:
This project has been shut down for the winter, work will begin in the spring of 2007 after the ATCO Pipeline
is lowered. In preparation for the winter, site cleanup and safety sign and fencing installation has taken place.
We ask that the public stay out of this area as it is still a construction site.
Remaining components of this project include:
- Completion of the new drainage ditch near and upstream of the ATCO line, including adding erosion
control & re-vegetation.
- Completing connection of the existing storm line into the new drainage ditch.
- Removal of the temporary storm drainage ditch North of the properties along 55 Ave and
construction of the permanent drainage swale which will provide the back-of-lot drainage
for these properties.
- Finalizing the shaping of the noise berm (smoothing, re-vegetation) North of the properties along 55 Ave.
- Covering of topsoil along the entire project area & re-vegetation.

Sept 8 - Installation of temporary drainage ditch to provide proper drainage on and through the site while
construction is taking place. Also constructing the permanent noise reduction berm along the North side of
the properties along 55 Avenue. |

| Oct 6 - Silt fencing to prevent work site erosion from entering Camrose Creek. |
Oct 6 - Removal of topsoil via track-hoe & gravel trucks. Topsoil is temporarily stockpiled on - and
off-site and will be used to re-vegetate the area after the work is completed. |

| Oct 6 - Compacting clay on future Camrose Drive subgrade. |
Oct 6 - Excavation of storm ditch via scrapers. The ditch will be approximately 20 to 25m wide &
approximately 2 to 3m deep, depending on the location for safety reasons. |
