Project Background: Lanfills have developed significantly over the past 20 years and in fact, are one of the safest and most environmentally friendly means of waste disposal available. Several layers of clay line the site, preventing contamination of the ground underneath. Fluids occurring in the organic waste, called leachate, are removed through a system of collection layers and perforated pipes. These liquids drain into a pipe and are then removed for treatment. This construction involves excavation of clay for daily cover and clay capping of cell, as well as the construciton of the clay liner. The final component of the construction is the installation of shredded tires to allow the leachate to follow more easily to the pipe discussed above. ![]() Engineering: The design and site supervision of this project will be conducted by the City Engineering Department and GPEC Consulting Ltd.
