Camrose Drive Bridge Deck Resurfacing

Partially Funded by:

Project Profile

This project includes replacement of the asphalt and waterproofing membrane on the Camrose Drive Bridge.

Description

Bridge structures are designed to expand and contract with temperature, and to flex under traffic loading. This continual flexing results in failures in the surface sooner than would be expected on a normal section of roadway.

Bridge decks can typically be expected to last ten years before requiring some form of resurfacing.

The Camrose Drive Bridge was constructed in 1987. Some problems with the road surface were noted in 1997. Temporary repairs were made in 1998 with the intention of extending the surface life for a few more years. We do not believe we can extend the life of the pavement any further, without compromising either vehicle safety or the impermeability of the road surface (it is very important to keep water away from the concrete and steel bridge structure to preserve its integrity).

This project will involve complete removal of the asphalt and the 'protection board' material which is below the asphalt.  New protection board and asphalt will then be applied.  Camrose drive will have to be closed to traffic for the duration of the project.

ISL Engineering of Edmonton, have been selected to design and manage the project.

City Council approved Millar Western Industries Ltd as the prime Contractor for the project.

Schedule

  • Project Final Design - January to April 2001
  • Project Tender    -    May 2001
  • Project Award - May 28, 2001
  • Construction Start - June 18, 2001

Phase One Construction - South Side of Bridge - East Bound Lane  - June 18 to July 4.

  • Traffic was limited to the single North Lane with traffic signals stopping and controlling traffic.
  • Construction of this phase took longer than anticipated.  The project involved a lot of hand labour to remove the old membrane.  The contractor worked double shifts to get the road fully open prior to the Rock Concert.

June 20, 2001.  Crews removing existing Asphalt surface from the bridge deck using a Roto-Milling machine.  Test holes shown in a grid pattern in the foreground were used to determine asphalt thickness so that damage to the underlying waterproofing membrane during asphalt removal is minimized.

June 21, 2001.  Hand removal of deteriorated waterproofing membrane protection board and remaining asphalt.  Any Damage to the existing waterproofing membrane must be repaired prior to installation of the new protection board and asphalt wearing surface.

July 8, 2001.  Sandblasting damaged membrane areas for new membrane application.

July 10, 2001.  Applying prime coat to prepared concrete surface for new membrane.

July 10, 2001.  Installing new hot rubberized asphaltic membrane to prepared concrete surfaces and to existing membrane c/w new protection board, 10 mm overall thickness.

July 11, 2001.  Placing first 40 mm lift of new ACP over waterproofing membrane system.

July 12, 2001.  Placing second 40 mm lift of new ACP.

July 12, 2001.  Completed EBL re-opened to traffic.  Temporary "Davidson Markers" delineate centerline.

Phase Two Construction - North Side of Bridge - West Bound Lane

  • Phase Two Construction started August 13, 2001 thereby avoiding the Jamboree and Rock Concert Traffic
  • During construction of Phase Two, the North Lane will be closed and two way traffic will be allowed on the South Lane using the same traffic signal control system as was used in phase one.
  • The project is expected to be complete by September 7, 2001.

Removal of the asphalt was completed August 15, 2001.

Removal of the protection board was a slow process involving a lot of hard manual labour.  Because of the daytime temperatures, crews worked two night shifts.  This work was complete by August 27, 2001.

Once the old protection board was removed, the bridge deck was sand blasted ( two days), and a new waterproofing membrane was then be installed followed by paving.

The project was completed in early September 2001.
