50 Street to 51 Street Partially Funded by: Project ProfileThis project will upgrade 48 Avenue (Highway 13) between 50 Street and 51 Street. The project will complete the highway widening project between 49 street and 56 street. The sections of highway east and west of this project have been completed in previous years. We hope that this project will improve both vehicle and pedestrian safety as well as improving the appearance of this high profile section of highway.
DescriptionThe highway was widened to the North to increase East and Westbound lane width's to 3.75m, which is the Canadian Standard. In addition the sidewalk on the North side was widened to provide a safer pedestrian environment. The 50 Street Left turn bay (East Bound to North Bound) was lengthened, and an asphalt overlay was constructed to improve the pavement surface and extend the life of the pavement. This section of highway is designed to match the areas to the East and West in both alignment and style. We are not able to move the North Sidewalk away from the road as we were able to do on the South Side, because there simply isn't enough room, but by widening the sidewalk and incorporating the design into the 7-11 and Tim Horton development features we have provided a similar effect. We had to work closely with the owners of the 7-11 and Tim Horton's during this project to maximize the aesthetic appeal and functionality of their access onto 48 Avenue. We appreciate their cooperation. Budget and Funding
